Statistics
Some people like stats about our small press operations.
Here are some from this round of open submissions!
Total number of submissions for The Ghosts of Gravelly Hill: 52, an increase of 20% over the call for NTE
Number of submissions from writers we’ve previously published: 12
Number of writers completely new to us: 32 (v happy about this!)
Hey, how come 32+12 does not equal 52? Some writers submitted to us again after not being successful for Night Time Economy or other publications.
Number of submissions that did not arrive with the correctly formed subject line: 3
Number of submissions not in the requested WORD document format: 2
A note on our subs process
Why do we ask for submission emails with a specific header format?
Few reasons:
First, to find out if you have read and followed our submission guidelines. Yes, it’s a test. You’d be amazed how many don’t do it properly and, while it doesn’t automatically rule you out of consideration, it certainly makes us frown for a moment and we don’t like doing that.
Secondly, it helps us organise the submissions. What you don’t see behind the scenes is a structured file and folder system for saving the subs to be ‘processed’. If we can clearly copy your name and make a folder for your document and any notes we make against it then that speeds things along.
Thirdly, it’s an audit trail. If we need to find an email we can search using the format we set out in the subs guidelines which saves us all time.
We’re going to start reading now!
Best,
FG
